Soteriology

S6E21 A Corporate View of Romans 9. As the soteriology series winds down, Dr. Brian Chilton and Curtis Evelo take time to examine one of the more controversial passages of Scripture in the Bible: Romans chapter 9. Brian and Curtis argue that Romans 9 teaches a corporate view of election when properly understood within the context of chapters 9-11. Rather than holding to individual election, Paul had God’s election of Israel as the chosen people in mind.

1. What are the corporate and individual election views of election concerning Romans 9?

2. Describe the topics surrounding Romans 9 in the context of the book.

3. What are the 9 advantages of election, and who does Paul have in mind in Romans 9:1-5?

4. Explain what Paul sets out to do in Romans 9:6-29.

5. What does Paul conclude in Romans 9:30-33?

6. Examining the contents of the chapter and its overall position in the theme of Romans, does Romans 9 teach individual election or corporate election?

7. With this in mind, how should we interpret Romans 9:11-24?

8. Additionally, what does this exploration show about the importance of keeping a passage of Scripture in its proper context?
