Biblical Hermeneutics is No Pumpkin Spice

Fall is upon us, and pumpkin spice is starting to flow, not in my house…but if that’s your thing, then…

So, I wanted to take a few minutes today to encourage you or even maybe help you get started on a journey of engagement with the Word of God, aka…The Bible! With the season of fall approaching and the seasonal changes of leaves and temperatures many may find themselves with a bit more time watching those changes from the inside of their windows in the morning or sitting on the couch in the evening. Can I encourage you to take this time to open the Bible and get into it?

Read the very thing that can nourish your life differently than anything the chaotic world can provide. I promise you won’t be disappointed. It brings clarity to a foggy mind. It brings a sense of peace to a world that is moving at a pace we were never designed to be at. It shows us that God has a plan and that plan cannot be thwarted by the free will of this crazy world. It shows us the depravity of man and the glorious redemption God provides through the cross. Find yourself immersed in the stories of Elijah and Elisha. Maybe looking for wisdom in the Proverbs, or finding the connection between Moses, Pharaoh, the Hebrew people, the lamb, hyssop, and the door posts. Maybe even imagine yourself walking on the shores of the Sea of Galilee listening to Jesus tell the parables.

All this being said, the more we engage the Bible the more our souls are fed! I do want to set a foundation for you as you engage the scripture, that is to use proper hermeneutics or method of interpretation. Understand that the author had a specific audience in mind, and it was written at a specific time in history. It was not written as a repair manual for your dishwasher so don’t look for that. The Bible was written in such a way that we can glean principles, we can see God move in cultures, work through impossible circumstances, change the heart of corrupt kings, then apply those principles to our situation.

If you have questions about how to read the Bible or what some of tools are to help you dig in, please look at bellatorchristi.com for podcasts, articles, and even an email address to ask deeper questions. We’d be blessed to help you with your thoughts or questions. I hope this encouraged you and will help you build a strong daily habit of reading through the most exciting book ever read!
