(SIS S1 E05) The New Perspective on Paul (w. Dr. Leo Percer)

Leo Percer

Brian G. Chilton and Curtis Evelo | July 25, 2021

Through the summertime, the Bellator Christi Podcast features a new series entitled the “Summer Interview Series” which engages Christian scholars and experts concerning issues in their chosen fields. On the fifth episode of season one, Brian and Curtis are joined by Dr. Leo Percer. Dr. Percer is the Ph.D. director of the Theology and Apologetics program at Liberty University. He is a scholar of Second Temple Judaism. On today’s show, Dr. Percer discusses the theological movement popularly known as the New Perspective of Paul. He defines the theology of the movement, describes what it is, what it isn’t, and how viewing Scripture through the lens of the author’s culture helps to explain any misconceptions that one may hold. Dr. Percer also discusses the philosophical, and sometime problematic, beliefs of Western individualized forms of Christianity and how it may differ from the original message of the NT writers. This is a show that you will not want to miss.

  1. What is the New Perspective on Paul?
  2. Can you distinguish the differences between covenantal nomism of the NPP and merit theology according to the traditional view of first century Judaism?
  3. What were the beliefs and contributions of E. P. Sanders to the NPP?
  4. How has N. T. Wright advanced the idea of the NPP?
  5. What are the main criticisms given against the NPP?
  6. In your class on the NPP, you mentioned the aspects of the church community that are often missed. How do our Western Americanized views of Christianity cloud our interpretation of Scripture, and how might we overcome our cultural influence, if that’s even possible?
  7. As a scholar in Second Temple Judaism, how has your research helped shape a more balanced biblical interpretation?
