Importance of a Summer Rest

Resting Girl

By: Curtis Evelo | June 25, 2022

So, this summer in the West is proving to be all over the ranges of thermometer and various weather patterns. In some parts of the state have already been hot enough to compete with Arizona and some are getting so much rain that record flooding is happening. Then other parts are mild and downright early spring-like with chances of snow during the night! So, with these varied conditions across the state, we definitely are seeing the stresses on the resources and the people and even the livestock.

This made me think of something our God put into place to help us maintain a bit of clarity and maybe even some sanity. The Sabbath rest. The Sabbath was in the Old Testament a way for God to set aside a day as a demonstration of God’s provision and also to be a difference between the Israelites and the other Gentile nations they would interact with.

Basic Principles of an Intentional Rest

Now Sabbath may look different to the Christian than it did in the days of Moses and the proclamation of the Law. I will say the basic principles still apply and those are:
1- God rested and so should we
2- God took time to enjoy his creation and so we need that as well
3- God said it was “good”. And so, it would benefit us to investigate those “good” things
4- God made a point to interact with us.

God’s Gift of an Intentional Rest

Now let me tell you these words I’m writing now are as convicting to myself and in no way do I have this figured out. Being in agriculture you could go 24/7 & 365 … something always needs attention, fixing, or planning but God designed the rest to be His good gift to us.

Conclusion

In conclusion I’d like to say there are “seasons” in our lives where we do need to just get the things done and may not have any breaks until it’s finished but I think that makes it all the more important to be intentional about rest when that particular thing is done. To me sometimes that rest is to go out in my shop and tinker and work on a project that brings me peace and I can glorify God by being creative. Then there’s other times it’s just hanging out with my family outside on the porch or in the barns watching them enjoy their creative talents. Sometimes it’s reading the Bible with a glass of iced tea. Be in God’s word daily consuming larger chunks of scripture and ponder what you’re reading and seek to glorify Him in all you do in work and play but most of all thank Him for His rest that is a gift to us.
