(Podcast 5.5.21) Rebuttal to Wayne Grudem’s Assessment of Molinism

Systematic Theology By Wayne Grudem

By: Brian G. Chilton | May 5, 2021

On tonight’s episode, Curtis Evelo has the night off. Therefore, Brian flies solo as he discusses and assesses Wayne Grudem’s critique of Molinism in the second edition of his book Systematic Theology: An Introduction to Biblical Doctrine, Grudem launches four objections to the Molinist soteriology and concludes that Molinism is nothing more than a “complicated version of the Arminian view” (Grudem, Systematic Theology, 462). Chilton contends that while Grudem is a scholar par excellence, his assessment of Molinism is found wanting and does not accurately convey the message of Molinism and is anachronistic in his comparison of Molinism to Arminianism. Additionally, Chilton reflects on the lessons he learned throughout his PhD program as he prepares to enter the last leg of his journey, denotes his appreciation for his new title as Senior Contributor at MoralApologetics.com, and plays the night sky report for the month of May by NASA.

Editorial Note: The podcast erroneously claimed that Arminius lived 150 years after Molina when in fact Molina and Arminius were contemporaries. Molina lived from 1535-1600 and Arminius lived from 1560-1609. Molina still preceded Arminius, adding validity to the accisation of anachronism. However, the two were not as far separated in time as the podcast portrayed. Thanks to fellow Molinist Tyson James for catching this error.

Liked your discourse on listening. At Fuller, Dan Fuller made his seminarians read “How to read a book” and focused on the need to carefully understand what the author is saying, before evaluating his content. Anything less is disrespectful and unbecoming of a Christ follower called to teach. Keep up your good work. I also became a Molinist after studying under Bill Craig and JP Moreland. It is such a fulsome understanding.
