(Podcast 5.31.19) Does the Bible Condone Rape?

Ten Commandments

Does the Bible condone rape? Skeptics often read Deuteronomy 22:28-29 and think that the law makes rape acceptable. According to the skeptics’ interpretation, the text claims that a man can rape a woman and then the woman is forced to marry her assailant. But is that really what the text implies? Oddly, only the CSB/HCSB and NIV add the term “rape” to the text. Does the verse indicate rape or does it speak of seduction where both individuals consent? What does the law’s connection with Numbers 22:16-17 say about the legal code? In the end, host Brian Chilton will illustrate that the text does not condone rape at all. Rather, it elevates a woman’s rights to a status that is higher than most ancient cultures of the time.
