The soteriology series continues with an examination of justification and redemption. What does it mean to be justified? What does it mean to be redeemed? These concepts are critically important to understand as one approaches the concept of salvation. Brian and Curtis look into these issues on this episode of the Bellator Christi Podcast.
- What is justification?
- To understand justification, we need to understand righteousness. So, what is the biblical description of righteousness?
- How does the OT describe righteousness?
- How does the NT advance the description of justification?
- What four factors demonstrate that justification is forensic?
- What objections are offered against for forensic justification?
- What role does human acts have with our faith?
- What is God’s response to righteousness?

I would object to justification on the grounds that in 25 years of counter-apologetics, I’ve never encountered a Christian who could demonstrate that anything in the NT applies to us today. We cannot possibly be unreasonable to disagree with a theory that was never established in the first place. I claim only that the NT letters applied to the audiences that the NT authors originally intended. If you claim the audience was broader than this, you have the burden to prove it. We don’t have a burden to refute such a theory until after it has been established as a prima facie case. The same with regard to your assumption that apostle Paul’s theological ramblings apply to us today.
Come on, Barry. Your objection is silly. You’re much smarter than that. The NT Epistles, while written to the churches at the time, dealt with general theological issues that pertain to believers of all times. Are we to suppose that Romans 8, which mentions the love of God, only applies to the Roman Christians receiving the letter? Of course not! It is absurd to think otherwise. Concerning justification, all one needs to do is to listen to the podcast and read the numerous passages mentioned to see that justification is a thoroughly genuine Christian doctrine.
Blessings,
Dr. Brian
