By: Brian G. Chilton and Curtis Evelo | February 9, 2022
During the winter months, the Bellator Christi Podcast examines a major arm of systematic theology. For this Winter Theology Series, we are exploring Christology–that is, the study of Christ. Last week, Brian Chilton and Curtis Evelo mentioned the various Christological titles and how they impacted the early church’s understanding of Jesus. On this episode, our cohosts peer into the second of a two-part series on the atonement. The first episode observes the lay of the land, as the six major theories on the atonement are described. Whereas, this episode examines the Scriptural teachings on various background theological concepts. Then, each theory is tested by the Scriptural data. Brian and Curtis then grade each theory, before listing their top atonement theories. Brian and Curtis then speak on how a blended view of two theories seem to work best.
- Let’s start off by recapping the six theories on the atonement.
- What tests will we use to see which theory best aligns with Scripture? (Nature of God, human nature and sin, substitution & propitiation, reconciliation)
- What does the Bible say about the nature of God?
- What does the Bible say about human nature & sin?
- What does the Bible say about sacrifice & propitiation?
- What does the Bible say about one’s reconciliation with God?
- How does the Socinian theory fare?
- How about the moral influence theory?
- Government theory?
- Ransom theory?
- Satisfaction theory?
- Penal substitution theory?
- What are your final thoughts on the atonement and the various theories?
