By: Brian G. Chilton and Curtis Evelo
During the winter months, the Bellator Christi Podcast examines a major arm of systematic theology. For this Winter Theology Series, we are exploring Christology–that is, the study of Christ. Last week, Brian Chilton and Curtis Evelo mentioned the various Christological titles and how they impacted the early church’s understanding of Jesus. On this episode, our cohosts peer into the first of a two-part series on the atonement. The first episode observes the lay of the land, as the six major theories on the atonement are described.
- What is the “atonement”?
- Is the concept of the atonement found in the Old Testament?
- In Christian theology, how many theories on the atonement have been developed over time?
- What is the Socinian theory of the atonement?
- What is the moral influence theory?
- What is the government theory of the atonement?
- What is the ransom theory, otherwise known as “Christus Victor”?
- What is the satisfaction theory of the atonement?
- What is the penal substitution theory of the atonement?

Are the errors in Arminian and Calvinist theories of the atonement, if any, so serious in your mind as to justify your calling into question the salvation of the Arminians and Calvinists who hold those theories?
Very good question, Barry! I think that both Calvinist and non-Calvinist soteriologies are well within the camp of Christian orthodoxy. While we do not agree with our Calvinist counterparts on issues of election, predestination, and a person’s freedom to respond to the grace of God; we still account them as brothers and sisters in Christ. Such issues are really more of an in-house debate within Christendom.
