The Sermon on the Mount has challenged people for thousands of years, from every generation, nationality, and worldview. Jesus of Nazareth’s Sermon on the Mount continues to challenge people today. In a world where evangelical Christians are divided over politics, theological conflicts, conspiracy theories, and self-inflicted drama due to nasty Twitter and Facebook posts; it would prove beneficial to step back and evaluate the lifestyle that Jesus calls his disciples to live. In this first in a series of podcasts on the Sermon on the Mount, Brian Chilton and Curtis Evelo peer into the bookends of the sermon, looking both at the Beatitudes (Matt. 5:1-12) and the Two Foundations (Matt. 7:24-29).
1. What is the Sermon on the Mount?
2. What is the background behind the message?
Beatitudes 5.1-12
3. The sermon begins with a series of beatitudes. What is a beatitude?
4. What do the beatitudes tell us about kingdom living?
5. Why does Jesus tell us that we are blessed when we are insulted and persecuted?
Two Foundations 7.24-29
6. Why is the last bookend called the two foundations?
7. Why does Jesus compare kingdom living to building a house?
8. What does Matthew indicate by Jesus teaching with authority?
9. What can we take from the bookends of the Sermon on the Mount, and how do they set the stage for the remainder of the message?
