As I sit on the porch and ponder the day and the days that we are in as a culture my heart is heavy. My grandchildren will never experience what it was when a day could go by when we didn’t have media in our face at every turn. They will never experience a time when schools weren’t a place to divide. We had the chance to run the neighborhood without the fear of some predator seeking his next victim.
But the things I can share with them are the very words my Grandpa shared with me. Those are the very words that can change the heart of even the most hardened person. And those are the words found in the Bible. As I pray over my grandsons and granddaughters, the life choices they will make, and the convictions they will have in this tumultuous world; I pray God gives them more strength than me, gives them more wisdom than Solomon, more heart for their neighbors than their great grandmother, and gives them better words than the greatest orator.
As I read the Scriptures I see a God who chose to come and bear the world’s sins on himself and to finish it all on the cross. You see He died for me and you, but he also died for the man standing in a cell that was convicted of murder. He died for those in both the Democratic and the Republican Parties. He died for those protesting and for those arresting them. When he was on the cross some of His last words were “It is FINISHED.” Those words were the very words that freed us from our sins. So, as my Grandpa would talk about the words in the Bible to me, I don’t think he knew I would be bold enough to write this article, but I know he knew that those very words that were written had the power to free me to do so. And so, I pray that my grandchildren will take the words of Scripture into this world with boldness and a caring heart just as the late Ravi Zacharias did. Can I ask all of you who believe that those words written in the Scriptures are life to pray those types of bold prayers over every child in this next generation, so they may be that very generation that changes the world we live in? Read, read, read, and as you do speak that over your own children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren! Because God’s heart is for the children… His children.
