Review of CSB Spurgeon Study Bible

Csb Spurgeon Study Bible 5

By: Brian Chilton | November 28, 2017

Summary

The CSB Spurgeon Study Bible is an all new study Bible that incorporates the notes of Charles Haddon Spurgeon along with the biblical text. As with most study Bibles, the notes appear at the bottom of the page. In addition to the study notes, the CSB features many of the outlines from Spurgeon’s sermons, some of Spurgeon’s more well-noted illustrations, as well as copies of Spurgeon’s handwritten notes. Also, Alistair Begg wrote a biography of Spurgeon which is found in the opening pages of the study Bible. Furthermore, the study Bible uses the wonderful Christian Standard Bible text, which is the perfect optimal blend of readability and accuracy.

Strengths/Weaknesses

The CSB Spurgeon Study Bible is a wonderful addition to anyone’s library. It is quite a good devotional Bible as one discovers Spurgeon’s insights to the Scripture being read. One feels as if they are picking the brain of Spurgeon as they read along. The study Bible is also good to further one’s understanding of Spurgeon himself. The brief biography of Spurgeon is well-written and quite insightful. I must say, while it is an aesthetic feature, I quite enjoy the cover. I received a hard copy edition of the study Bible from B&H publishers to give an honest review. The material makes the Bible quite easy to hold and is not slick as some Bibles are. The print is quite large which I, having bad eyesight, very much enjoy.

There are only two downsides to this study Bible. For one, the study notes are not as numerous as I had hoped. The New Testament is full of notes, however the Old Testament does not. In reality, one may look through several pages of the Old Testament before finding a note of any kind, outside of the notes included in the CSB translation. In addition, the notes are not going to inform one of historical details of the text. I would suggest the CSB Study Bible if one is looking for more historical and/or exegetical information.

Benefits

The CSB Spurgeon Study Bible is a great devotional Bible. If you are looking for a Bible that gives a lot of data concerning the biblical text, then this study Bible is probably not for you. But, if you are a lover of Charles Spurgeon and are looking for a good study Bible to use for your devotions, I would highly encourage you to give the CSB Spurgeon Study Bible a try.

Rating

I give the CSB Spurgeon Study Bible a 4 out of 5 stars.
