Many online bloggers are under the assumption that the early Christians expected and anticipated the resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. Such, however, was not the case. Rather, the resurrection of 
Jesus took the church by great surprise. N. T. Wright, in his book The Resurrection of the Son of God, rightly argues that the early Christians anticipated the resurrection at the end of the age, but not after the death of Jesus. The early Christians’ pre-resurrection theology was influenced by the thinking of their time–Second Temple Judaism; largely of the Pharisaical variety, to a smaller degree of the Essenes. Thus, the resurrection of Jesus changed the early church in three major ways.
1. The resurrection of Jesus changed their theology (Luke 24:36-49; John 11:20-27, 38-44).
2. The resurrection of Jesus changed their mission (Matthew 28:16-20).
3. The resurrection of Jesus changed their comfort (John 21:15-19; 1 Corinthians 15:12-28).
