(BCP) Message: “Mere Christianity: The Fundamentals of Christ’s Return” (1 Thessalonians 4:13-5:11)

Brian Chilton Preaching

On Sunday mornings, we have been journeying through the fundamental doctrines of the Christian faith in a series named after C. S. Lewis’ great work “Mere Christianity.” In this message, Pastor Brian discusses the fundamentals of Christ’s return. Anyone who knows anything about theology realizes that there are an abundance of perspectives as it pertains to the return of Christ. There are some who are premillennialists, postmillennialists, and amillennialists. Of those who are premillenniallists, there are pretribulationalists (those who believe Christ will return before the tribulational period), prewrath (those who think that Christ will return before the wrath of God is poured out), and post-tribulationalists (those who think that Christ will return after the tribulation).

Despite the varied differences in opinion, there is one consistency that is found within all theories: Christ will return. What does this fundamental truth entail? Join us as we explore four fundamentals of Christ’s return.

Mere Christianity: Fundamentals of Christ’s Return

1 Thessalonians 4:13-5:11

I. The fundamental of Christ’s REAL return (4:13, 17-18).

     A. Based on the reality of Christ’s HOPE (through his resurrection) (4:13).

     B. Based on the reality of Christ’s PROMISE (4:17-18).

II. The fundamental of Christ’s RESURRECTING return (4:13-18).

      A. Christ resurrects first those in PARADISE (4:14, 16).

      B. Christ resurrects second those on EARTH (4:15, 17).

III. The fundamental of Christ’s RANDOM return (5:1-4).

      A.The randomness of Christ’s return is likened to a THIEF (5:1, 2, 4).

      B. The randomness of Christ’s return is likened to BIRTH PAINS (5:3).

IV. The fundamental of Christ’s REASSURING return (5:5-11).

      A. Christ’s return reassures us to live PREPARED (5:5-8).

      B. Christ’s return reassures us to live in PEACE (5:9-11).
